This week we continue with another film on the Spanish civil war, this time from the perspective of the women anarchist fighters.

"At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the nun Maria is forced to flee her convent. She takes refuge in a brothel, until it is liberated by a woman's anarchist group. Maria joins the group and eventually goes to the front. This is a historical drama that examins the complexities of this resistance to the rise of fasicm in Europe in the 1930s.

The camera follows the life of community members of one block in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn) on the hottest day of the year. As the day gets hotter the community becomes more and more tense, bringing all the anger, racism and despair to a boiling point. The film is in English with subtitles.

Ken Loach's film The Navigators (2001) takes place in South Yorkshire. A small group of railway maintenance men discover that because of privatization, their lives will never be the same. When the trusty British Rail sign is replaced by one reading East Midland Infrastructure, it is clear that there will be the inevitable winners and losers as downsizing and efficiency become the new buzzwords.

Network is a 1976 film about the creation of news through the exploitation and manipulation of reality in a cynical game of chasing the highest possible ratings.

When news anchor Howard Beal gets fired for low ratings, he begins to speak "the truth" on air. His off the cuff rants give the network incredible ratings and they immediately seek ways to keep milking Howard's popularity.

Tutti Frutti Cinema is back at SC Rog!

So please join us at 20.30 tomorrow evening for a screening of Barry Levinson's 1997 film Wag the Dog . The film stars Robert De Nero, Anne Hecht and Dustin Hoffman. Wag the Dog takes a humorous, if somewhat cynical, look at the work of a spin doctor in manipulating the media and public opinion during the Re-election campaign of an American president.

Battle In Seattle

This week we move Tutti Frutti Cinema to Tuesday night in view of the general strike called on Wednesday. Join us at 21.00 for a screening of the 2007 film about the WTO protest in Seattle and stay after for a discussion on the questions being opened through the strike, the April 19 (#19A) demonstration and beyond!

The film depicts the historic protest in 1999, as thousands of activists arrive in Seattle, Washington in masses to protest the WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999. The World Trade Organization is considered by protesters to contribute to widening the socioeconomic gap between the rich and the poor while it claims to be fixing it and increasing world hunger, disease and death.
